Anise seeds are warm, sweet seeds with hints of liquorice, fennel and star anise.
Anise seed or Aniseed is used predominantly in Mediterranean and South West Asian cuisine, it has a warming sweet flavour with hints of Licorice and Fennel. Not to be confused with Star Anise, of which it shares its flavours and name , these 2 spices are cultivated from different plants!
Traditionally used in confectionery , it is found in Humbugs, Anise balls, Spogs and Black Jacks. When not making sweets, try adding this spice into rich tomato sauces alongside shellfish or use as a rub with pork or rabbit.
