Rafi Fernandez 1944-2013

Rafi was born in India in 1944 and came to the UK in 1965. Through
various travels around the globe and a constant desire to learn she developed
an incredible cooking knowledge and skill. This grew and she was able to write
her first book in 1985, Malaysian Cookery. Many other books followed.Arguably, her greatest achievement was setting up Rafis
Spicebox in 1988 in the small town of Sudbury. Although Suffolk seemed an
unusual place to start an Asian business she was incredibly brave and
determined for it to succeed. As the business grew, her son Lee joined to assist with the growing
demands, fuelling his own passion for food. In 2004 Rafi took another brave
step and opened her York shop with the aid of her other son Kevin. He also
quickly gained a passion for food through time spent with Rafi as her
infectious manner spread across a growing team.In later years health issues had seen Rafi take a back seat in
operations; she has always been the common thread running through the business,
staff and customers. We would like to take this
opportunity to express our sadness in this time of great loss but to also
celebrate the life of a truly remarkable person, with an unrivalled passion and
determination that will not be forgotten by anyone who ever met her.An inspiration to the entire
Rafi’s team, she will be greatly missed. Please contact us if you wish to have details of the funeral to be held on Tuesday 28th May, on 01904 638 119 or york@spicebox.co.uk.

Curry of the Month: Patia Masala

The first in our series of ‘Curry of the
Month’ kicks off with the delicious, but perhaps slightly less well-known,
Patia. A Parsee sweet and sour curry, it works brilliantly with lamb, prawns and
fish, or courgettes and new potatoes as a veggie option. This dish is fresh
and vibrant; to add even more flavour and texture (and impress your dinner guests) garnish it with shredded mint, cherry
tomatoes and spring onions to serve. Traditionally served with a dhal and some
yellow rice, this curry is perfect for those warmer spring evenings!Try the patia in this delicious Summer Fish Curry recipe idea.

Our Comic Relief spicy bake sale.

The Spicebox Bake SaleWe were busy thinking up ideas for our spicy bake-sale for a
few weeks before Red Nose Day, asking our customers for their baking tips and
watching the hit BBC show for inspiration. As always, our customers had some
brilliant suggestions, such as white chocolate and cardamom shortbreads and
chilli-chocolate brownies to name just a few.We came up with all sorts and we were all up until late on
Thursday night baking our creations: Spicy bread, Chai Scones, Lime-Chilli
Cupcakes, Nigella Biscotti and many more! When Red Nose Day finally came
around, the shop was filled with bunting and little, red dinosaur noses and the
fridge was bursting with freshly made cakes, scones and breads. We had printed
out our recipes to encourage people to use spices in baking as well as in
curry, and these went down a treat! We had a lot of our wonderful customers in—even those who
were not eating cakes over Lent still gave generous donations. The sale was
brilliant fun; we talked not just about good curry, but about good cakes and
good causes too. We’re all very proud of ourselves and our customers for
raising over £300 for Comic Relief.Same again next year?
